International Recognition for Liverpool VolunteersTuesday 5 December was International Volunteer Day and this special occasion was marked in Liverpool with awards presented by the Lord Mayor of Liverpool to volunteers of various nationalities at a celebratory event organised by Volunteer Centre Liverpool.![]() The Right Worshipful the Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor Joan Lang, presented Certificates of Appreciation to 40 volunteers who have found volunteering opportunities through Volunteer Centre Liverpool’s Outreach Project. All of the volunteers give their time to projects in Liverpool, including environmental projects, lunch clubs for older people, advice agencies, large international charities and small, local community projects; tasks undertaken include minibus driving, providing information and advice, being a trustee of a charity, practical conservation work, office administration and a host of other activities. ![]() Manuela Vittori, Outreach Worker at Volunteer Centre Liverpool said: “Over the past two years Volunteer Centre Liverpool’s Outreach Project has helped hundreds of local people find their ideal volunteering opportunity. Some people know exactly what they want to do, but others are not sure. This is where we can help, by providing face-to-face individual appointments to find the perfect match between the volunteer and the organisation that needs help. We have received many cards and letters from people thanking us for our help and telling us about their volunteering. The comments we have received include the news that someone has found paid work as a result of the experience they gained as a volunteer; another person was glad to be able to get out of the house and do something with their spare time after a bereavement; some of the most moving comments are from refugees and asylum seekers who have expressed thanks at being able to give something back to the country that has taken them in.” The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Kofi Anan, said: “Volunteerism is, of course, its own reward. But International Volunteer Day is an opportunity to remind all who seek selflessly to improve our world that their contributions are recognised. On my last International Volunteer Day as Secretary-General, I express my sincere gratitude to all men and women who share their skills and talents with the world, and hope that many more will follow their example.” ![]() International Volunteer Day was established by the United National General Assembly through Resolution 40/212 on 17 December 1985. Since then, governments, the UN system and civil society organisations have successfully joined volunteers around the world to celebrate the day on 5 December. |
